Congressman Don Bacon votes for Republican Tax Scam once again

OMAHA, Nebraska (July 3, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us condemns Congressman Don Bacon’s decision to once again vote to cut health care and take food from his constituents, all to fund tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. Local advocates warned this week that more than 100,000 Nebraskans could lose health care coverage while six rural hospitals in the state could close as a result of the Republican Tax Scam. Bacon voted for it anyway.

“Congressman Don Bacon missed a golden opportunity to cast a legacy-making vote to protect programs that working class and middle income Nebraskans count on to survive,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “Once again, he has broken his promise to protect Medicaid and instead gave more tax breaks to the top 1%.”

In fact, Medicaid cuts in the updated bill are twice as high as what Congressman Bacon once claimed was his “red line” this spring. With analysis after analysis finding the rich would get richer and the poor would get poorer, there are deep concerns about what this will mean for the tens of millions of Medicaid and SNAP recipients across the country—as well as already fragile hospital systems.

“At this point, working class people can’t trust Don Bacon to choose us over the 1%. I asked him and his staff myself in April to protect Medicaid for my sister. Today’s vote is a betrayal,” Omaha taxpayer Vanessa Chavez Jurado said. “People who need health care will lose that coverage as a result of this legislation. I fear for what this means for people like my sister who I have tirelessly advocated for during this entire debate. My family has seen firsthand the strain on Medicaid, and we worry it will get even worse with a dramatic cut in funding.”

“In my volunteering efforts with a local food pantry, I have seen the need grow month by month,” Omaha volunteer Tamara Bailey said. “Congressman Bacon turned his back on his constituents. Nonprofits in our area can barely keep up with demands as it is. More people will go hungry as our community tries to step up even more to help.”

In early June, organizations focused on food insecurity in the Omaha metro participated in a roundtable with Nebraska For Us that focused on the consequences of SNAP cuts. Together Omaha stated it serves nearly twice as many people per day in 2025 compared to just two years earlier. The fear now is that dramatic growth in need will only accelerate in the months and years ahead.

Since 2023, Nebraska For Us has called attention to key federal economic policies that affect working class and middle income Nebraskans. As the dust settles on this damaging piece of legislation, it will be important to focus on the consequences that will be felt in the years to come.
