Nebraska For Us statement as state SNAP enrollment falls nearly 10% in one year, new Farm Bill vote awaits

“Grocery prices keep going up and working Nebraskans are struggling to get by. Unfortunately, after Congressmen Don Bacon and Mike Flood’s votes in 2025 to cut SNAP as part of the Republican Tax Law, enrollment is down nearly 10% in Nebraska from December 2024 to December 2025. The majority of those cuts have come since last summer’s vote dramatically cutting the program.

One-in-seven Nebraskans are facing hunger right now. Statewide for children, that figure is a staggering one-in-five. We know things are getting harder for consumers as it is, from tariffs to rising gas prices, which makes this cut in enrollment that much more disheartening. People are in need of food now more than ever. Nonprofits and organizations that provide food assistance to people in our community cannot keep up with the soaring demand, and it will only get worse.

“Making matters worse, the Farm Bill Reps. Bacon and Flood are set to vote on this week does not begin to address the massive cuts to SNAP made in the last year. For that reason, our leaders must vote against this version of the bill.”

-State Director Angie Lauritsen

“As we all struggle to afford groceries, it is unfair to see Nebraskans vilified and hurt by the votes of our federal leaders. Given how much the need for food assistance is growing at our area nonprofits, the number of people qualifying for SNAP should not be falling. I hope people who need help can get it. So many of us are just trying to make it to our next paycheck.”
