Work slowed in Omaha because of tariffs as government shutdown does not cease collection of tariff revenue
OMAHA, Nebraska (October 2, 2025)—Nebraska For Us is responding to the continuation of tariff revenue collection during the government shutdown on the heels of news that a German farm equipment manufacturer will soon move some of its work out of Omaha due to tariffs on steel and aluminum.
On more than one occasion, Congressman Don Bacon and our entire federal delegation have voted to support tariffs. Those policy decisions serve as a one-two punch as consumers are paying higher prices and businesses are forced to stop work, lay off employees, or close down due to growing costs.
“Prices are not getting any lower, and we were told to expect an immediate reduction in costs at the beginning of this year,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “Congressman Bacon has voted to support tariffs three times this year, which raises costs for our local small businesses and families. Companies are now facing difficult decisions about processes and workforce needs because of his votes. When will enough be enough for our economy?”
For much of 2025, Nebraska For Us has continually demanded Rep. Bacon vote against tariffs. Instead, he has chosen to raise prices on everyday Nebraskans while admitting he did it with the goal of passing the Republican Tax Law earlier this year. Working class and middle income Nebraskans should not be paying more so that the ultra-wealthy can get a tax cut.
Nebraska For Us also maintains the call on our federal delegation to return to Washington, find solutions on rising health care costs, and reopen the government.
