Congressman Don Bacon votes to cut nearly $300B from SNAP to pay for billionaire tax handout

OMAHA, Nebraska (May 15, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us is calling attention to Congressman Don Bacon’s decision to vote in favor of dramatic cuts to food stamps—far above what he previously stated should be cut. Late Wednesday night, the House Committee on Agriculture finalized its plan to slash nearly $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as part of a package to give more tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy and corporations.

“Not only did Congressman Bacon vote to take food from kids, working families, veterans, and seniors, but he also voted against a series of amendments that would have lessened the harm done to Nebraskans and even helped farmers and our community members,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “From refusing to reinstate funding for school meals to opposing an increase in funding to the Emergency Food Assistance Program that would help local food pantries, his votes show he is siding with the ultra-wealthy to help fund massive tax breaks for them while taking food away from the working class.”

Congressman Bacon also voted against amendments that would have blocked SNAP cuts that affect families with children, veterans, and rural communities, along with voting against an amendment that would have helped farmers by reinstating federal contracts that were unexpectedly terminated by Elon Musk’s DOGE.

“After more than 30 years as an educator, I now serve my community at a local food pantry and see the need for food growing every single day,” Omaha volunteer Tamara Bailey said. “These massive cuts to SNAP will strain food pantries and nonprofits across the metro that are already fighting to keep up with the increased demand from our community.”

Nebraska For Us focuses on federal economic policies that impact working class and middle income Nebraskans, specifically with the potential extension or expansion of the 2017 GOP Tax Law and cuts to programs Nebraska families rely on. Congressman Bacon should instead support a fairer tax code where the wealthy pay their fair share rather than harming those living paycheck to paycheck to give more tax handouts to corporations and billionaires.
