Statement urging Congressman Don Bacon to vote against steep SNAP cuts
“As a member of the House Committee on Agriculture, it is crucial that Congressman Don Bacon do his part to protect SNAP funding. The bill the committee is considering would make the largest SNAP cuts in history and put critical food assistance at risk for thousands of Nebraskans, including veterans and families with children. Congressman Bacon previously expressed support for $100 billion in cuts to SNAP instead of $230 billion. The plan in front of him today would slash $290 billion! Given that, we expect him to vote no.
“As Nebraska For Us has shown in the last year, local food pantries are already experiencing extreme levels of demand, and goods are getting more expensive by the day, making it harder for people to afford basic necessities. Substantial cuts to SNAP will only make this strain even worse.
“With people struggling to get by amid rising prices, we call on Congressman Bacon to do the right thing and protect working class Nebraskans rather than take away food assistance to fund new massive tax breaks disproportionately to the top earners. Help those who actually need it!”
