House plans to slash key programs as discussions on extreme cuts get underway

OMAHA, Nebraska (May 9, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us is responding to a new Wall Street Journal report confirming Congressman Don Bacon supports cutting $500 billion from Medicaid to pay for huge tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. With just days to go before key House committees begin making moves on how much to cut, Nebraska For Us continues to call on Congressman Bacon to do the right thing and oppose any cuts to Medicaid, which will take lifesaving care away from those who need it.

“There is no sugarcoating what Republicans in Congress are trying to do here—hacking away at vital lifelines for working class Nebraskans who are fighting to make it to their next paycheck,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “With extreme tariffs that  Bacon allowed to continue driving economic anxiety, it will also be working class and middle income Nebraskans who will have the hardest time paying higher prices. Amid the constant chaos, this erodes trust in our elected leaders even more.”

Various House Committees will meet next week to map out how they will dramatically cut funding to key programs to give more tax breaks to billionaires and corporations. Congressman Bacon is a member of the House Committee on Agriculture which is responsible for SNAP, and the committee is tasked with cutting $230 billion, which largely  will come from the program.

“Congressman Bacon might use creative language to avoid the reality of Nebraskans losing their health coverage and the devastation cuts could have on rural hospitals, which are already struggling,” Lauritsen said. “Recent analyses from the Congressional Budget Office indicate that millions of Americans would lose their insurance under a variety of proposals Republicans are pushing.”

Nebraska For Us focuses on federal economic policies that impact working class and middle income Nebraskans, specifically with the potential extension or expansion of the 2017 GOP Tax Law and cuts to programs Nebraska families rely on. Congressman Bacon should instead support a fairer tax code where the wealthy pay their fair share rather than harming those living paycheck to paycheck to give more tax handouts to corporations and billionaires.
