Nebraska For Us debuts Omaha billboard urging Congressman Don Bacon to stop supporting cuts to Medicaid
OMAHA, Nebraska (May 12, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us is taking its message to the I-80 and I-680 interchange as we demand Congressman Don Bacon vote against any cuts to Medicaid. The Congressman recently said he supports cutting a massive $500 billion from Medicaid. The move would be part of the reconciliation process to extend the 2017 GOP Tax Law which would deliver massive tax breaks to the ultra wealthy.
“In recent weeks, Nebraskans have grown more concerned about price hikes across the board thanks to new taxes in the form of extreme tariffs that are creating mass economic uncertainty and anxiety. Congressman Don Bacon voted to support those tariffs,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “Fears are especially high for the nearly 350,000 Nebraskans who rely on Medicaid and could lose their health care if Congressman Bacon votes to cut the program. Congressman Bacon must stand up for working Nebraskans and vote against any cuts to Medicaid.”
In addition to providing care to hundreds of thousands of Nebraskans, Medicaid also makes up a significant portion of funding for hospitals in the state—especially in our rural communities. According to the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform, at least three rural Nebraska hospitals are already at immediate risk for closure. Cuts to Medicaid could make that problem even worse.
The new billboard will remain in place for the next month as various committees in the House of Representatives decide what and how much to cut in order to fund a massive tax giveaway that favors the top earners over working class and middle income Nebraskans. That includes the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is set to meet this week and is tasked with cutting $880 billion from Medicaid.
Bacon sits on the House Agriculture Committee, which is tasked with cutting $230 billion, largely from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Once committees finish their markup process, the full package will go to the House floor for a final vote. Call Congressman Bacon and tell him, no cuts to Medicaid and SNAP!
Nebraska For Us focuses on federal economic policies that impact working class and middle income Nebraskans, specifically with the potential extension or expansion of the 2017 GOP Tax Law and cuts to programs Nebraska families rely on. Congressman Bacon should instead support a fairer tax code.
