Nebraska For Us joins local pantry for meal distribution, regrants $1,000 to purchase more supplies
Local coalition urges Bacon, state’s federal delegation to reverse previously enacted SNAP cuts and tariffs as costs rise and the need grows
OMAHA, Nebraska (September 25, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us joined volunteers at Salem Food Pantry for one of its regularly scheduled food distribution dates as the rising prices of groceries and the impact of tariffs are causing an increased need. With SNAP cuts looming on the horizon, there are fears the problem will only get worse. This year, Congressman Don Bacon and Nebraska’s entire federal delegation voted for the Republican Tax Law which includes cuts to food stamps that are expected to cause 1 million children nationwide to lose access to food assistance.
“For more than a year, we have been beating the drum on how catastrophic SNAP cuts would be for our local communities — especially at a time when everyday household items just keep getting more expensive,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “In many cases, food stamps only help so much for some recipients. Families rely on food pantries to help fill the gaps, in addition to people who need federal assistance but don’t qualify for it. While we hope our $1,000 regrant and donation of hygiene supplies help fill this need in the short-term, it is ultimately up to our federal delegation to do their job and restore funding for these critical programs.”
“I met with Congressman Bacon’s office earlier this year and expressed my concerns about the potential of SNAP cuts to give more tax breaks to the ultra wealthy, and the vote that followed has only caused my worry to grow,” volunteer Tamara Bailey said. “We live in a very generous community, but I fear it will not be able to go far enough and lead to more hunger in the Omaha metro, especially as these cuts begin to set in. We need to come together to help people, not hurt them.”
This month, Nebraska For Us has welcomed donations to help area pantries, taken our message on the road to call for an end to SNAP cuts, hosted various leaders for an important discussion on the consequences of the cuts while raising funds to pay down lunch debt, and now we are supporting Salem Food Pantry to continue amplifying the message. It is especially important as we are now just days away from a potential government shutdown, which could result in people being unable to receive crucial benefits and services.
