Medicaid, SNAP recipients concerned about state's dramatic federal revenue losses
OMAHA, Nebraska (September 9, 2025)—Nebraska For Us and local Medicaid and SNAP recipients are sounding the alarm following the recent Nebraska Department of Revenue report showing more than $400 million of losses in federal funding over the next four years due to the passage of the Republican Tax Law. Additionally, 30,000 Nebraskans will lose Medicaid and nearly 10,000 are at immediate risk of losing food assistance. It puts even more pressure on the state budget after Congressman Don Bacon and our entire federal delegation voted in support of these drastic cuts.
“With my health challenges, I am incredibly worried about how these cuts will continue to cascade into my life and the lives of so many others,” Omaha Medicaid and SNAP recipient Brooke Nykamp said. “There are millions of us out there, and people do not realize what we are dealing with. Having conversations with friends, family, and everyone else around me has helped change hearts and minds around the importance of these vital programs that keep me afloat.”
“Brooke is not alone as we have heard from countless Nebraskans who are bracing for impact as we learn more and more about this deeply unpopular and harmful plan to cut health care and food assistance,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “Before these cuts even fully kick in, rural health care providers are closing their doors and food pantries are experiencing major increases in demand. It will only get worse from here.”
September is National Hunger Month, so Nebraska For Us is focusing heavily on SNAP cuts and hunger throughout the month, in addition to the other funding that remains at risk. We continue to call on Congressman Bacon and his fellow Republicans to reverse these cuts while delivering on promises to lower prices. Working class and middle income Nebraskans need relief now.
