Nebraska For Us statement as first-in-the-nation Medicaid cuts take effect in Nebraska today

“As of today, Nebraska is beginning to implement sweeping cuts to the state’s Medicaid program that didn’t need to be made until early 2027. The primary goal of these cuts is to make it even more difficult for people who need health care to access it in order to give tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy, and Congressmen Don Bacon and Mike Flood voted for it to happen.

“The majority of Americans now say their financial situation is getting worse. The data shows consumers feeling worse about their personal finances than they did during the height of the 2020 pandemic and the 2008 financial crisis. Those figures, alone, show that these cuts are being done in a way that does not reflect the very real pain our fellow Nebraskans are feeling.

“Health care, gas prices, groceries, insurance, and most other goods keep getting more expensive while vital services are being cut. Nebraska’s federal leaders need to reverse these cuts before the damage piles on. The timing could not be worse.”

-State Director Angie Lauritsen

“This time last year, Congressman Don Bacon’s staff told me $500 billion in Medicaid cuts was a ‘red line.’ Just months later, he and Nebraska’s other representatives voted to cut Medicaid by almost $1 trillion instead. Our leaders are clearly out of touch with the financial realities we are experiencing every day. These cuts will cause even more pain for people just trying to keep their lights on and put food on the table.”
