New CBO analysis: Republican Tax Plan takes from hardworking Nebraskans to make high earners richer

OMAHA, Nebraska (June 12, 2025)—A new analysis out today from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office shows that the Republican Tax Plan will lead to a dramatic shift in resources from the bottom 40% of earners to the top 10%. It is yet another reminder that the Republican plan benefits the ultra-wealthy by taking health care and food away from Nebraskans living paycheck to paycheck. At the same time, new polling shows a majority of Americans oppose the Republican Tax Plan—which Congressman Don Bacon voted for last month.

“The more we are learning about this package, the worse it looks for working class and middle income Nebraskans,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “How can hardworking Nebraskans get ahead when costs continue to rise and the tariffs that Congressman Don Bacon voted to support threaten economic stability?”

New polling from Quinnipiac University shows the general public is not buying what Republicans in Congress are selling:

  • Support: 27%

  • Oppose: 53%

  • No opinion: 20%

Quinnipiac also found that cuts to Medicaid are deeply unpopular:

  • Medicaid funding should increase: 47%

  • Medicaid funding should stay the same: 40%

  • Medicaid funding should decrease: 10%

“The numbers are clear: Americans don’t want Republicans in Congress to take away their food and healthcare to give more tax breaks to the wealthy.” Lauritsen said. “Congressman Bacon and our federal delegation should listen to their constituents and stop voting for legislation that takes from working people to give even more to billionaires and corporations.”

Nebraska For Us focuses on federal economic policies that impact working class and middle income Nebraskans, specifically with the potential extension or expansion of the 2017 GOP Tax Law and cuts to programs Nebraska families rely on. Congressman Bacon should instead support a fairer tax code where the wealthy pay their fair share rather than harming those living paycheck to paycheck to give more tax handouts to corporations and billionaires.
