Statement on Congressman Don Bacon’s decision to retire from Congress

“Since launching in 2023, Nebraska For Us has demanded that Congressman Don Bacon lower costs and fight for working class and middle income Nebraskans. Despite tonight’s news, Congressman Bacon will remain a voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives until January 2027.

“Nebraska For Us has kept the pressure on Bacon to do the right thing for working families with recent roundtables on Medicaid and SNAP cuts, visits to his D.C. office, criticism of his vote to allow tariffs to go unchecked, and attention around January’s federal funding freeze and resulting confusion.

“At the same time, we raised awareness of the rising cost of back-to-school expenses and child care along with the metro’s growing food insecurity crisis while Congressman Bacon voted to cut health care and take food from his constituents to give more tax breaks to the wealthy.  All the while, our primary focus has been on how to best help those in our community who need it most.

“With that in mind—especially as massive cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP in the Republican Tax Scam are considered in the days and weeks to come—we urge Congressman Bacon to end his Congressional career on a positive note and vote against it rather than once again voting for those cuts just to fund tax breaks for the top 1%.

“He has spent years siding with the ultra-wealthy over the Nebraskans he was elected to serve. Now is the time to get it right. Does he want to stand with the ultra-wealthy or will he finally put working families first?”
