Nebraska For Us holds discussion on soaring prices and Congressman Mike Flood's role in it

Local coalition holds Republican Price Tag: $4.5 Trillion Happy Hour event

LINCOLN, Nebraska (August 25, 2026)—With the House’s August recess in its closing weeks, Nebraska For Us held a happy hour gathering in Lincoln Monday with a discussion about rising costs and the ever-growing affordability crisis that is hitting working class Nebraskans especially hard. The conversation also focused on Congressman Mike Flood’s votes in Congress that have added onto the pain.

The happy hour is part of a series of events Nebraska For Us is holding to showcase the tradeoffs that $4.5 trillion in tax cuts primarily for the wealthy have caused—from a reduction in food assistance to Nebraskans beginning to lose access to their health care. It is one of many Republican Price Tag events taking place across the country this month.

“SNAP cuts have really ramped up in the past couple months, and now we are awaiting the inevitable drop in Medicaid enrollment to follow,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “We have been sounding the alarm for more than a year, and now we are beginning to see these cuts happening in real time.”

“I have lost access to Medicaid and SNAP this year as these cuts have really hit hard,” Lincoln resident Amanda said. “I am not sure what the state wants from me, and I am not sure they can tell me what they want. I am now $700 short of where I was this time last year, and the state is making it virtually impossible to get answers of any kind.”

Since Congressman Flood and congressional Republicans voted for the Republican Tax Law in July 2025, prices for hardworking Nebraskans to rise roughly $3,500 a year. At the same time, health insurance premiums are getting more expensive while tariffs and the Iran war have contributed to higher gas prices and soaring grocery bills.

To help meet the growing challenges in our local communities, Nebraska For Us used the gathering to accept donations of nonperishable food items and hygiene products that will be distributed in the Lincoln area.

Nebraska For Us used this opportunity to also call attention to steep cuts Congressman Flood has made to federal programs like SNAP and Medicaid that Nebraskans count on.
