Nebraska For Us statement as state halts SNAP benefits to people in need
“At the heart of the Republican majority’s government shutdown is the growing cost of health care, which ties directly into the sky high prices Nebraskans are facing across all industries. Now, more than 150,000 Nebraskans on SNAP will have an even harder time paying for their groceries as Republicans in Congress have decided cutting off access to food is more important than lowering health care costs.
“Congressmen Don Bacon and Mike Flood already voted to dramatically cut SNAP earlier this summer, putting area food pantries and nonprofits in a challenging position. Halting the program altogether will mean children, seniors, and veterans could go hungry while those organizations will try to fill the gaps. We need our federal delegation to return to Washington, permanently extend the health care tax credits, and bring relief to consumers now.”
