Nebraska For Us statement as SNAP enrollment plummets nearly 17%

“The data is deeply worrying, but it is far from surprising. Since all of Nebraska’s representatives and senators voted to cut SNAP last July, the number of Nebraskans enrolled in the food assistance program has dropped by 16.8% through the end of June. From May to June of this year, alone, SNAP’s enrollment fell by 4.5%. These cuts were made to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy.

“Making matters more challenging on top of that, the latest DHHS data also shows it took the state far longer than usual to process applications. These roadblocks and cuts are happening by design. Groceries did not get cheaper. The economy did not dramatically improve. The cost of living has not gotten any better.

“This is wrong. Congressmen Don Bacon and Mike Flood have created a complete mess. The state’s budget is in a major crisis, and so are the financial conditions of hardworking Nebraskans who are just trying to put food on the table. The working class is hurting while the rich keep getting more.”
