Nebraska For Us statement as government shutdown hits two weeks, signs of economic weakness emerge
“We are now two weeks into the Republican majority’s government shutdown with no end in sight. In another two weeks, tens of millions of Americans will face serious sticker shock as they get a first look at how much more they will pay for their health insurance premiums as Republicans in Congress refuse to lower health care costs.
“From day one, we have called on Congressman Don Bacon and Nebraska’s entire federal delegation to get back to Washington, negotiate a solution that can pass the House and Senate, and ensure we can afford our health care in 2026.
“Dragging this out will help no one. With the International Monetary Fund now saying economic growth will likely slow in the near future due largely to tariffs that Congressman Bacon voted to support, the time to act is now. People are already struggling to get by, and U.S. consumers are paying the majority of the increased tariff costs. With open enrollment just 17 days away, their struggles may only get worse.”
